One of the cool things about raising endangered heritage breeds, is that you not only end up with some of the rarest animals in the world, but you also get some of the rarest fibers. Soay sheep have wool enjoyed by everyone we have spoken to that have experience with it. One spinner described it as "a blast to spin" and said "It spun well and has a nice bounce to it." Medieval reenactors enjoy it because it is the closest thing we have to the historical wool of that time period and has a very different texture to modern day wool.

We know from exactly which individual sheep each bag of our wool comes from. We hand-roo it from each ewe in the spring when they start to shed. Therefore the awesome mix of colors you get is still from a single ewe! Each bag of wool will come with a card that includes the name of the ewe and a picture, and a little story about something that happened with/to her in the past year. These might be funny stories, something about their birthing that year or some other details that we think you might find fun!

 

Since Soay are tiny, and we usually get only one or two gallon bags per ewe - though there are exceptions. Each bag averages between 4-6 ounces of wool and since there is so much variation in the sheep, each will be unique each year. All wool is sold raw and unwashed. Shedding takes all summer, in some cases, and we post it as we get it, so check back if we don't have what you are looking for right now! Until we post that we are done for the year, it means the shedding still continues! Bags are $30 unless otherwise marked.

We CAN ship this item to the USA. So far our cheapest method to most zip codes has been a medium flat rate, which will fit two bags for the same price. If you have another preferred method we are happy to accommodate. Email Us with your choices and we will send you a PayPal invoice for your purchase. NOTE: In the event that two people order the same fleece before we are able to update the web site, the fleece will go to the first person to order it.
